The University of Ottawa is the ideal university for the city-loving student, as the campus is located right in the heart of the city. The University of Ottawa has been an integral part of Ottawa’s cityscape since 1848!
Students and faculty at the University of Ottawa are within comfortable walking distance of the Parliament Buildings, and can steep themselves in the lore and history of this working monument to Canada’s government.
Attendees and visitors are a stones throw from Byward Market as well, this venue offering shopping, restaurants, and night life to suit almost any taste, as well as being the part of the venue for the revamped Ottawa Tulip Festival held in May of each year.
The campus is adjacent to the Rideau Canal and the kilometers of walking / jogging / cycling paths bordering it.
Most areas of campus have ready access to Ottawa’s renowned OC Transpo System, providing timely and reliable public transit throughout the Ottawa area.
The University of Ottawa campus offers visitors and students a wonderful mix of heritage buildings interspersed with modern architecture in lecture halls, administration buildings and residences.
Students at U of O are welcome to join their almost 35,000 fellow students; undergrads – grads – and international (2005 statistics), and study in the discipline of their choice in either of Canada’s two official languages – English and French. Too, there is the possibility of total French immersion in some undergrad programs.
This really resonates with our family as our eldest daughter achieved her honours degree at ‘ol U of O with her last year studies being undertaken completely in French. Kudos to U of O, and of course, kudos to her for studying so hard! With her solely Anglophone background, we’re amazed and pleased that she is now teaching elementary school children in Ontario, in a total French immersion program.

To support student studies and research there are extensive library resources including the renowned Morriset Library, the one with ongoing renovations.
The Morriset now boasts a fifth-floor fireplace, couches, wireless internet services and many laptop computers available for loan while students and faculty are working in the library.

It is said that the columns gracing the East side front entrance of Tabaret Hall inspired the logo for the University of Ottawa.
The massive columned Tabaret Hall was built in 1905, while the addition of new wings and general expansion continued up until about 1931.
A statue honours Father Joseph-Henri Tabaret and stands in a sheltered garden just to the south of the main steps and entrance. He is remembered as the driving force behind university and for decades in the late 1800’s laboured tirelessly towards his vision of a major bilingual institution of higher learning.
Over its 100+ years of history, Tabaret Hall has been a dormitory for students and staff, has fed people as a dining hall, provided solace, contemplation and worship as a chapel, looked after people’s bodies as well as their souls in an iteration as a gymnasium, among other things.
Visitors to Tabaret Hall today will find the University’s central admin offices, office of the registrar, HR center and various services.
When our daughter was married on a warm August Saturday afternoon quite a few years back we took many wonderful pictures of the bride and groom, bridal party and family on the steps of beautiful Tabaret Hall which is located just across the common from the church in the photo above. St. Joseph’s Parish on the University of Ottawa campus is where she and her husband shared their wedding vows.

Typically there are 30,000+ undergrads registered in all the faculties at U of O. There are around 3,000 on-campus spots available in the seven residences.
The university normally guarantees housing to scholarship recipients that have been accepted at U of O.
